Selection into postgraduate programs in the Faculty of Business and Economics is based on applicant’s academic merit during their entire academic history.
For Australian qualifications
The academic performance for domestic qualification is determined by a Weighted Average Mark (WAM).
What is the WAM?
A Weighted Average Mark (WAM) is an average of the percentage marks received for each unit of a course, with different weightings for different unit (year) levels at an Australian bachelor degree. First year marks are weighted at half that of later years.
For applicants whose highest degree is postgraduate level, all postgraduate units will be allocated the weighting for later year units. For further enquries please contact the Graduate Student Office telephone: +61 9903 1400.
What information is required to calculate a WAM?
To calculate a WAM the following information is required on transcripts*:
- Mark per unit (usually a 0-100% mark range with 50% being a pass)
- Credit points per unit
- Year level of unit
If your academic transcript only supplies a letter grade that converts to a percentage mark range, the lowest mark in the range will be used in the WAM calculation. For example, if a letter grade of HD (80%-100%) was awarded, a mark of 80 will be used in the WAM.
GPA/Average Mark
If the information provided on the transcript is insufficient to calculate a WAM, a Grade Point Average (GPA) will be used in the first instance. The GPA is the average of all grades achieved in a course of study, weighted according to the credit point value of each unit. If the applicant’s transcript does not provide a GPA, an average mark will be calculated.
Applicants with a WAM/Average Mark of no more than 5% (or equivalent GPA) below the published score may be considered if places become available.
For international qualifications (including New Zealand)
For international qualifications, the applicant’s academic performance is determined by the Grade Point Average (GPA). The GPA is the average of all grades achieved by a student in a course of study, weighted according to the credit point value of each unit.
If the applicant’s transcript does not provide a GPA, an average mark will be calculated.
