Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

The MPhil is generally a 100% research degree signifying that the candidate has successfully completed a course of research training and satisfied the examiners the he/she can carry out a research project and analyse critically the results. A number of coursework options are also available in some departments of the Faculty. An MPhil thesis should make a contribution to an existing body of knowledge, by applying, clarifying, critiquing or interpreting that knowledge. The normal length of candidature is 18 months (full-time) or 3 years (part-time). Enrolment can be by on-campus (internal) at any of the Faculty's campuses (except South Africa) or distance (external) mode.

Applicants wishing to enrol by 100% thesis may submit an application to the Faculty Research Office at any time of the year. Applicants proposing to enrol in a combination of thesis and coursework may be required to commence at the start of either semester 1 or 2. In this case, applicants are required to submit their applications at least 3 months prior to the start of the semester.

All applicants are urged to contact the relevant HDR coordinator in their proposed department/centre of enrolment PRIOR to submitting their application in order to discuss their proposed research project and the availability of appropriate supervision in that department/centre.
