How to Apply

The first step is to find out whether you meet the Faculty's eligibility requirements for academic qualifications and English proficiency. The next step is to contact the relevant department if you know which discipline area your research could be supervised within. If you are unsure, please contact the Faculty Research Office and we will assist you.

There are nine departments in the Faculty of Business and Economics. Each discipline has additional requirements to ensure that a student, once enrolled, will have the right support to enable them to complete their research degree. Please refer to the table below for web links to the departments and their administrative contacts.

How do I find a supervisor?

The department will assign you a supervisor if required. You may like to review the department’s website for information on academic staff profiles and the research activity undertaken within the department.

When will a decision be made?

Once the department has assessed your documentation, they will advise you what your next steps are. Applications are not requested unless the department is able to provide appropriate supervision and facilities.  By remaining in contact with the HDR administrator, you will be updated on the progress of your application.

How do I apply?

Email the following documentation to the administrator of the appropriate department. Use  above list for address:

  • a preliminary research proposal. This will give us an idea of your research topic, some background to the research (literature review), research questions and/or hypotheses, and research methods to be used (approximately 5 pages);
  • copies of all your academic transcripts in English and copies of the originals in the language that the study was done in. A grading scale must be included;
  • details of academic English language test results if English is not your first language and your tertiary qualifications were completed in a language other than English.  Please note that tests taken more than two years prior to your application will not be accepted;
  • details of any thesis/dissertation or research projects completed as part of an academic award;
  • details of any research publications including citation, for example conference papers, journal articles. You will need to provide copies of evidence -  abstract, contents page and cover of publication;
  • certified copy of your passport or citizenship details;
  • curriculum vitae (CV).

When assessing an application we look at the student's academic history to determine the course work undertaken together with research methodology and statistical courses.  Research degree applicants are further assessed for evidence of research experience which may consist of a thesis/dissertation/research report and/or academic publications.
