Deferred ExaminationsPolicySpecial (deferred) examination Special (deferred) examination A special examination is usually referred to as a deferred examination (see section 4.5 of the University's Examination Regulations). Such examinations differ from supplementary examinations in that a candidate may not sit the original examination as scheduled or, having sat all or part of it and received a mark between 0 - 49 after adjustment for any relevant special consideration, is able to satisfy the faculty that medical or other circumstances so severely affected his/her performance that he/she should be entitled to another examination. In exceptional circumstances a deferred examination may also be granted to a student with a mark between 50 and 79. To be eligible for a deferred examination, students must submit an Application for Special Consideration to the Faculty on the prescribed form. Students who are granted and sit for a special/deferred examination may be given a final mark and grade for the unit in accordance with the normal marking regime, taking into account all other pieces of assessment; therefore for a special/deferred examination the full range of marks and grades is possible. Power to award special/deferred examinations The power to award special/deferred examinations is vested in the Faculty's Board of Examiners and the duly appointed delegates of the Faculty Board (see Examinations Regulations). Examiners may make recommendations for deferred examinations to the Board and its delegates. These determinations are based on the special consideration application. Students remain eligible for the awarding of a deferred examination even if there is no possibility of the student of passing the unit overall. These are essentially the same as those for final examinations (Examinations Regulations, Final Examinations). Staff are advised to ascertain from the faculty administrative office on their campus whether (and, if so, when) they will be required to be available to examine special/deferred examination scripts. Teaching staff are not obliged to provide extra tuition to students who have been awarded special/deferred examinations. Students who have failed the final examination are, however, entitled to have access to their answers in that examination. Special consideration for special/deferred examinations A further deferral of the examination will not normally be granted if, as a result of a special consideration for the final examination, a student is granted a deferred examination, then submits a new special consideration application for the period of the deferred examination. Further deferrals may only be granted by the Course Director. Timing of deferred examinations The Academic Board of the University defines deferred examination periods for each semester. Where a student is granted permission to sit a deferred examination, this right will be forfeited if they do not sit the deferred examination during the official period. Students may seek approval to sit their deferred examination at a time arranged with the Chief Examiner in the unit. Permission will only be granted in exceptional circumstances and, normally, this time must be earlier than the designated University period for supplementary and deferred examinations. Finalisation of deferred, supplementary and withheld resultsAll coursework-degree results are to be finalised and transmitted to the Chair of the Board of Examiners (or nominees) no later than the date for the submission of supplementary and special examination results in deferred and supplementary examination period following the student's enrolment in the unit. All deferred, supplementary and withheld coursework-degree results must be amended to a final mark and grade. Where no marks have been submitted for a unit, a mark of 0 N will be allocated for the unit. In exceptional circumstances the course director may approve the granting of a further withheld for a period not exceeding 5 months in normal circumstances.
