Intermission
Intermission
1. Applying for intermission
| Coursework students can apply for intermission via the Web Enrolment System (WES) at https://my.monash.edu.au/wes/ or by using the 'Application to intermit' form available from the Student Services Form Page.
Submission date:
- Semester 1 - the application should be submitted during the re-enrolment period or any time up to 30 March if you have already re-enrolled.
- Semester 2 - the application can be submitted up to 30 August.
Applications for intermission outside of these dates will be subject to the conditions at the time. i.e. after the CSP census date, fees will apply and units may be recorded as "fail".
* If you are enrolled with TMC Singapore, SPEED Hong Kong, you need to keep in mind specified dates as listed in the "information for students document".
2. Length of intermission
Intermission is normally granted for a period of no more than one calendar year or two consecutive semesters. If you wish to extend your intermission, you must re-apply and your faculty will determine whether an extension is possible. For information on the time limit for completion of your course and the maximum intermission period permitted, please refer to the Student Resource Guide.
If you are approved for intermission, you will be notified in writing by your faculty within approximately 3 weeks.
3. International students and intermission
International on-campus students may only be granted intermission on compassionate grounds. This includes bereavement and extreme personal hardship. Documentation must be provided in order for the intermission to be granted. Your application must be approved by Monash International, who will provide you with information about possible consequences to your visa. You must then bring the application to the Student Services Office for final approval.
You may really need to return home but be unable to take intermission due to ESOS regulations. Depending on the circumstances, the Faculty may be able to allow you to withdraw in good standing from the university and give you a letter of guaranteed re-entry to return at a later date. Please see your Student Services Office about this should you have any concerns.
You could also consider transferring to a course offered via off-campus learning or to a course offered at Monash in Malaysia or South Africa or via a partnered program in Singapore or Hong Kong or Perth.
4. Number of acceptable intermissions
You can apply for intermission for as many times as you need, as long as you keep in mind that for undergraduate courses, the total period of approved leave is counted in the time limit for completion of the course. The period of approved intermission is not counted in the time limit for completion of graduate courses. The maximum time limit for completion of each course is given in the faculty regulations included in the Student Resource Guide.
5. Applying for intermission after the Census date
You can apply for intermission after the Census date, but you will be charged for units in which you are enrolled and they will show as discontinued or fail on your record depending on the date of your intermission.
If you are applying after the Census date due to a medical reason, you must provide documentary evidence that your medical problem was evident before the census date, then consideration will be given to backdating your application. If you are a HECS deferred student you can apply to the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) at their website for remission for part or all of your HECS debt.
6. Refunding fees for the current semester
If you apply to discontinue or take intermission before the CSP census date you can apply for a refund. Fees will not be refunded if you discontinue after the CSP census date, unless you can provide documentary evidence that would support medical reasons or personal trauma which occurred prior to the CSP census date.
*If you are enrolled with TMC Singapore, SPEED Hong Kong, please refer to the specific dates as recorded in the "information for students document".
7. Returning to study
All students must re-enrol during the October/November re-enrolment period if returning to study in either Semester 1 or 2 of the following year. You will need to access WES to re-enrol.
On-campus students need to access Allocate+ to select timetabling preferences.
If you are taking intermission in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 you will need to re-enrol for the following year in the normal re-enrolment period (October/November). Re-enrolment advice will be mailed to you while you are on intermission.
8. Receiving information whilst on intermission
You should always check your Monash email account important information while you are on intermission. Re-enrolment information will also be mailed to you in at the end of Semester 2. If your postal address changes while you are on intermission you must update your address details through my.monash.
*If you are enrolled with TMC Singapore, SPEED Hong Kong, you should contact each location at least three months before you are due to return from your intermission.
9. Deferring your course (meaning intermission)
If you are a current student you are seeking information about Intermission. Deferring a course is only possible for new students who have been offered a place in a course but have not yet commenced study.
10. Study elsewhere while on deferment of study or intermission
The Faculty does not allow students to study elsewhere while on deferment of study or intermission and claim credit within their course. Students who are admitted to the University are not permitted to defer their enrolment in order to undertake study elsewhere in Australia.
Please see Faculty Policy.
