Definition of NP grade
A Near Pass (NP) grade is awarded for a mark of between 45 and 49 per cent in a unit confirmed as the last unit necessary to complete an undergraduate course provided that:
- all the work for the unit has been completed, and
- the student has sat the final examination.
Students enrolled prior to 2008 and completing prior to 2010
A student who receives a NP grade will be given the normal credit points for the unit (normally six), but it is recognised that the student has not met the normal criteria for success and a full pass in that unit.
Number of NP grades permissible [top]
A maximum of one NP grade may be awarded after 1 January 2008: awarded for a unit confirmed as the last unit necessary to complete an undergraduate course.
Students enrolled prior to 2008 and completing prior to 2010
-
A maximum of two NPs may be awarded after 1 January 2004: one awarded in a compulsory common core unit and the other in a last unt to complet an undergraduate course.
-
If the student receives more than one mark of between 45 and 49 per cent in a compulsory common core unit in any semester, the Faculty Board of Examiners will determine the unit to which the NP is to be applied. Once they are granted one NP for a compulsory common core unit, they will NOT be eligible for any further NPs under this policy. However, students may transfer the NP to another unit for which they are eligible if this is done within 6 weeks of the release of results.
Who is eligible for the NP policy [top]
The Faculty undergraduate NP policy applies to students enrolled in undergraduate courses managed by the Faculty of Business and Economics. This includes students studying an inter-faculty double degree managed by the Faculty of Business and Economics. It does not apply to:
- double degree students in courses managed by another Faculty (even if these include a Business and Economics component),
- students enrolled in another Faculty's course who take Business and Economics units,
- honours students.
Note: This is an undergraduate policy and does not apply to graduate students.
Applying for NP - Compulsory common core unit [top]
If a student enrolled prior to 2008 and completing prior to 2010 has a mark of between 45 and 49 per cent, and they meet all the requirements of the NP policy (as stated in Definition of NP grade, point 1), they will be awarded a NP for a compulsory common core unit. The student does not have to apply in order to receive the NP, it is awarded automatically. The NP will appear on the student's academic transcript.
Applying for NP - Last unit to complete a course [top]
If a student has a mark of between 45 and 49 per cent, and they meet all the requirements of the NP policy (as stated in Definition of NP grade, point 2), they will be awarded a NP for the last unit to complete their course. This NP will NOT be awarded automatically, the student will need to complete the application form and lodge it at their campus Student Services Office.
Difference between a Pass and a Near Pass [top]
A Pass is awarded for a mark of 50 per cent or above and means that the student has successfully passed all assessment requirements for the unit. A student is permitted to enrol in a subsequent unit for which the first unit is a prerequisite.
A Near Pass is considered a conceded pass. The student will be given the normal credit points for the unit (normally six), but it is recognised that the student has not met the normal criteria for success and a full pass in that unit. As a conceded pass, the NP is recognised as a prerequisite for another unit. However, students are strongly advised to seek course advice from the Faculty before undertaking further study in any discipline for which they receive a NP.
Upgrading a Near Pass to a Pass [top]
A student can "upgrade" a Near Pass to a Pass by re-enrolling in the unit, however this is not a requirement. Students are strongly advised to consider their knowledge in the study area and to seek course advice from the Faculty before undertaking further study in any discipline for which they receive a NP.
Applying for a Near Pass
Application for Near Pass is done by downloading an application form and submitting it to your relevant Business and Economics student administration office no later than 6 weeks after the release of exam results.
Re-studying a unit [top]
A student can re-enrol in a unit. However, as a NP is considered a pass, and a student cannot re-enrol in a unit already passed, the NP must be converted to N (Fail).
Students should write to their Student Services Office to request that the grade be converted to a Fail, and attach an Enrolment Amendment Form (available at Student Services counter) for the unit. The results of both attempts will show on the academic transcript.
Professional accreditation [top]
Students who wish to receive professional accreditation should contact the relevant professional body to determine the status of NP grades.
Note: A Near Pass is recognised as a conceded pass for this purpose.
Transferring into the Faculty with a NP [top]
Students who apply for a course transfer are considered to be making a new enrolment, so current rules relating to a maximum of one NP for the last unit to complete an undergraduate course will apply. Students transferring into a Faculty degree (either from another Business and Economics degree or from a degree in another faculty).
NP result recorded on the academic transcript [top]
The NP result is recorded as a NP on the academic transcript but not on the testamur, as no results are recorded on the testamur.
Transferring a NP to another compulsory core unit [top]
If the student receives more than one mark of between 45 and 49 per cent in a compulsory common core unit in any semester, the Faculty Board of Examiners will determine the unit to which the NP is to be applied. In this case, a student may transfer this NP to another compulsory common core unit they failed in the same semester - provided they received a mark of between 45 and 49 per cent for the other unit. In addition, they must apply to transfer the NP within six weeks of publication of results. Results received in an earlier semester cannot be transferred.
Double degree students[top]
If a student is in an inter-faculty double degree managed by the Faculty of Business and Economics, this Faculty's policies apply.
This NP Policy does not apply to students studying an inter-faculty double degree managed by another faculty. Students will need to check with the managing faculty for its course rules and whether they are eligible for NPs.
Last unit for double degree[top]
Double degree students are eligible for a NP only for the unit confirmed as the last unit required for course completion in the double degree - not to complete a single component of the degree. The last unit may have been taken from the non-managing faculty or from another faculty if the student is eligible to take electives in their degree.
