Business and Economic Forecasting Unit - Profile

Aims

  • To develop improved forecasting methodologies for applications in business and economics
  • To disseminate knowledge of forecasting methodologies to students and the community

Activities

These aims will be achieved by:

  • Attracting funds to support forecasting research
  • Fostering collaborative research with prominent local and overseas researchers
  • Providing scholarships to attract high quality postgraduate students
  • Providing high quality supervision for postgraduate students
  • Developing and maintaining a web site to promote the activities of the Unit and provide information of general interest to the forecasting fraternity
  • Providing business and industry with a 'one-stop-shop' for the latest forecasting technologies
  • Conducting short in-house courses for business people involved in forecasting
  • Undertaking consulting and contract research in forecasting
  • Developing computer software for forecasting

Background

The Business and Economic Forecasting Unit at Monash University was established in January 2001. It was designed to build on the prevailing research strengths of the staff of the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics in the area of forecasting. The founding Director of the Unit is Professor Rob J. Hyndman and the Deputy Director is Associate Professor Ralph D. Snyder. Both are well known for their contributions to the development of forecasting methodology and in applying forecasting methods in business contexts.
