Tourism Study at Monash

You can choose from a range of options for studying tourism at Monash, depending on whether you are interested in full-time study or part-time study, whether you wish to work toward a qualification or are more interested in one-off short courses and workshops, and whether you are interested in classroom based learning or self-directed study and/or research. Most of the undergraduate tourism offerings at Monash are within the Faculty of Business and Economics, but a number of individual subjects in tourism are offered by the Arts Faculty. The Master of Tourism course is offered by the Faculty of Arts, but again there are individual subjects offered by Business and Economics. Honours and higher degrees by research are offered by both Faculties and it is even possible to have joint supervision across the two Faculties. The cross-fertilisation and collaboration between staff and students in the two Faculties makes tourism study at Monash rather special and different to tourism study at most other Australian universities.

Postgraduate courses in Tourism

If you already have an undergraduate qualification, even if it is unrelated to tourism, you may wish to enrol in the Master of Tourism.

We are particularly proud of our current and past higher degree research students in tourism, and we work hard at ensuring that MPhil and PhD research projects are both academically rigorous and industry-relevant. To find out more about staff who can supervise projects at this level, please have a look at the list of TRU Members.

Undergraduate courses in Tourism

If you are a high school leaver or wish to return to undergraduate study after some time away, you can undertake a Bachelor of Business and Commerce with a tourism major as well as combine this with a second major or a second degree. You can also undertake an honours year in tourism, which includes both coursework and a major piece of research. A double degree (e.g. Bach of Business and Commerce / Bach of Communication) and an Honours degree each take a total of four years of study; while a single degree (even with a double major) takes three years. All of these options are particularly suitable for someone who wants to pursue a career in the tourism industry.
