PhD Title

Relationships of local communities with tourism in protected areas in developing countries

Synopsis

A study of the impacts of tourism in the West Bali National Park, Indonesia, on local communities and the effects of these impacts on capacity for community-based conservation.

 

Completed Research Project

"Studies on the process of local community involvement in small-scale tourism development"

Tourism research within local community-oriented and pro-poor tourism, particularly on the way in which rural communities get involved at the various stages of tourism development. The study was conducted to understand the involvement process and to identify key aspects for better program design, planning and implementation in other places with similar rural, developing country setting. It has also provided the opportunity to develop tools for evaluating the impacts of tourism development on local community.

The study was funded by the National University of Singapore Research Committee.
