Managers of multi-use trails within protected areas face numerous challenges while attempting to 1) maintain user safety, 2) protect the natural environment, and 3) provide high-quality user experiences. A significant challenge for managers in Australia's National Parks is managing the mix of different user groups' activities including mountain biking, bushwalking and trail-biking on multi-use trails. While the vast majority of user groups and other stakeholders appear to be satisfied with their recreation experience, conflict can occur particularly when user groups wish to concurrently experience a park.
The aim of the research is to discern the nature and extent of recreation conflict primarily within protected areas in Victoria, with the theoretical contribution being to provide a better understanding of the nature of recreational conflict and its antecedents and consequences. Grampians National Park, Bunyip State Park and the Greater Bendigo National Park have been identified by Parks Victoria as protected area parks where recreation conflict is a pertinent issue.
