"Integrating marketing and interpretation by protected areas in a strategic communication framework"

Aims to develop capacity and provide a framework and set of tools for a practical yet theory-based approach to strategic communication planning that leads both interpretive and marketing specialists to make good decisions about audiences, messages and media that are linked to achieving the missions and objectives of PA management agencies.

This research aims to (a) identify the most problematic visitor behaviours in a cross-section of protected areas and produce a reliable classification system of these behaviours as a guide to conducting behaviour modification research (stage 1), (b) experimentally evaluate theory-based messages aimed at modifying or eliminating problem behaviours in a representative subset of the protected areas studied (stages 2, 3 and 4), and (c) initiate capacity-building programs on contemporary communication research aimed at preparing protected area managers and university researchers to be effective behavioural research partners (beginning with stage 2 and continuing through to stage 4).
