Current Research Strength 2
Tourism Economics
Research on the economics of tourism focuses on the use of advanced tools to measure the performance of the industry and evaluate economic impacts. A key feature of the work has been the adaptation of a computable general equilibrium model to incorporate a detailed tourism sector, which has enabled the analysis of tourism crises such as SARS, the gains from special events, and the impact of promotion. Current work involves the development of new measures of tourism yield. Measures of tourism industry performance, such as international price competitiveness and productivity, have also been developed. Research into the economics of aviation and airports covers performance measurement, aviation liberalisation in the ASEAN region, privatisation and regulation of airports, policy towards predatory conduct in liberalised aviation markets, and the impact of low cost carriers in Australia and the ASEAN region.
