What we do

In the early days of tourism studies, much of the research focus world-wide was on documenting tourism's economics and employment benefits, forecasting its growth and maximising its positive impacts. While members of TRU are actively involved in these important dimensions, we engage in a much broader range of issues with far-reaching implications for policy-making, planning, marketing and managing tourism's growth and impacts.

The Tourism Research Unit has strategically focused on two Current Research Strengths and five Emerging Research Strengths in which we are competitive nationally and internationally. Members also undertake research outside these areas that span all aspects of tourism management.

Activities currently undertaken by TRU members include:

  • Independent scholarly research leading to publications (internally funded by Monash University)
  • Collaborative research with industry research partners (jointly-funded with government, non-profit and private sector partners, often with the support of research grants)
  • Contract research (externally funded by industry and government research partners)
  • Research supervision (PhD, Masters and Honours postgraduate study)
  • Research dissemination (via publications, research presentations, seminar and workshops)
